“White Food” · 31 December 2012

I need to stay away from “white food.”

“White food” is the stuff that has few nutrients and little color left in it after processing. (My wife may or may not have coined the term.) The more processed the food, the whiter it is. And the less nutrition it has. Think white bread.

Lately, I have been eating too much white food. The problem with that is overeating. For some reason I tend to overeat when I have too much processed foods. I do not know whether it is because those foods take up less volume in my stomach or because they have ingredients that make me want to eat more. Either way, the result is the same. I do eat more.

Maybe that is the problem with our society these days. We tend to eat too much junk. Too many sugary or starchy processed foods. Too much food from the center aisles of the grocery store. If we even get to the grocery store.

Busy lives and fast foods go together. And whether those foods come from the store or a fast food restaurant is immaterial. Those fast foods, those white foods, those processed and prepackaged foods provide fewer nutrients than whole foods.

As we come out of the holiday season and into a new year, I need to go back to eating more whole and wholesome foods and less processed foods. For my health’s sake, I need to stay away from white food.
