Others Are Crazy Too · 21 June 2013
Sometimes it helps to know that somebody else is a little crazy.
A friend from work is eating mostly vegan now. Perry said he is not being a Nazi about the whole vegan thing. He is sold on the notion that processed foods and animal products have low nutritional value, but like myself, he will indulge in junk food and animal products every once in a while. I guess we are both cheater vegans. And maybe a little crazy.
When I asked Perry why he was eating mostly vegan, he said that it was because he had seen the writing on the wall. Like myself, he had many reasons to be leery of diabetes. Genetics and weight were certainly concerns, but Perry had other science against him. He had had higher than normal fasting glucose readings. He had been pre-diabetic for several years.
So he decided to change his diet to get healthy.
Perry lost about thirty pounds after changing his eating. He felt great. But he said the best thing was that his fasting glucose was in the normal range. Something that had not happened for who knows how long. He was ecstatic.
It should not have come as a surprise that Perry and I have come on such similar paths. We have even watched some of the same shows and read the same books (most notably, Forks Over Knives and Eat to Live). Still, I am amazed that we have come to many of the same conclusions for many of the same reasons. I know I should not be. After all, most people want to avoid diabetes and heart disease. Most people want to be healthy. Unfortunately, most people have been misinformed about health and nutrition. Or they do not want to know the truth.
Despite all the misinformation out there, it is always nice to hear about other people changing their lives to get healthy. Sometimes it is scary the things they will try, but when I hear about people eating vegan or close, I get excited. Especially, when I hear they are eating a whole food, plant-based diet rather than trying to eat out of boxes to stay away from meat and dairy. I get excited because I know there is one more person I can talk to about eating right and being healthy without the worry that the other person will think I am trying to convert him. Or think I am a nutcase.
When it comes right down to it, sometimes we need somebody else who is on the same path. Sometimes we need to preach to the choir. And sometimes, we just need to know that somebody else is a little crazy.
