Something Fishy · 1 May 2010
int.kitchen.day
Two mothers are sitting in the kitchen/breakfast nook just sitting down to sip tea.
mother1
(excited and apprehensive)
So give me the juicy gossip.
mother2
(cocking her head to listen)
Do you hear that?
MOTHER1
(cocking her head to check too)
I don’t hear anything.
MOTHER2
Exactly.
(pause)
Something fishy is going on.
MOTHER2 stares off in space as if remembering. She sees a bedroom.
int.bedroom.day
No faces are seen, but the sheets of a single bed are thrown up from both sides at the head. It is apparent that the bed covers are being thrown up by a person on each side. Most likely teenagers. The teenagers hop under the covers and the covers start to settle down on top of them. Both a boy and girl can be heard giggling.
INT.KITCHEN.DAY
MOTHER1 is waving her hands in front of MOTHER2’s glazed eyes. They are still sitting at the kitchen table.
MOTHER1
(waving her hands in front of MOTHER2’s face)
Boo!
MOTHER2
(coming out of her daze)
Huh? Oh! The kids are too quiet.
MOTHER2 gets up quickly and starts for the stairs. MOTHER 1 follows. They both tiptoe up the last few steps.
INT.HALLWAY.DAY
MOTHER2 puts her finger to lips to tell her friend to be quiet. They sneak to the door and put their ears close. They hear what is going on inside the bedroom.
GIRL
(giggling)
Don’t do that. It tickles.
boy
(mischievously)
I know that you like it.
GIRL
(giggling more)
If you keep it up, our moms will hear.
BOY
(even more mischievously)
Do you think they will come in to check on us like when we were kids in first grade?
GIRL
(giggling even more)
Maybe they are listening at the door like they did back then.
MOTHER1 and MOTHER2 are shocked and appalled by what they hear. They burst into the bedroom. They just see a teenage boy and a teenage girl sitting on the floor. There are cards on the floor and the boy is tickling the girl. They have all their clothes on.
BOY
(looking up at the mothers)
Boo.
Everybody laughs. The scene fades.
INT.KITCHEN.DAY
The two mothers are still sitting at the kitchen table. MOTHER2 is far away again. Her eyes are glazed.
MOTHER1
(waving her hands in front of MOTHER2’s face)
Boo.
MOTHER2
(coming out of her daze)
Oh.
(pause with a head shake and giggling a nervous giggle)
I was just thinking about our kids in 11 or 12 years from now.
MOTHER1
(thinking just a bit)
They would make a good couple. But I think that worrying about them while they are in first grade is a bit premature.
MOTHER2
(giggling again)
Probably true. Then again, I kissed my first boy when I was in first grade. But I doubt my daughter…
INT.hallway.DAY
MOTHER1 flies out of her chair and up the stairs before MOTHER2 can finish her sentence. MOTHER2 goes up the stairs quickly too. She halts at the door with MOTHER1 and they both listen. The voices of two first graders can be heard on the other side of the door.
GIRL
So when we are older and get married, you can be president and we can live in the White House.
BOY
(matter of factly)
Nah. I don’t want to be president and hafta wear a tie every day. I want to be gym teacher like Mr. Burk.
(It is apparent that his head angle changes)
You can be a first grade teacher like Mrs. Burk and we can walk down the halls together and have lunch together every day.
MOTHER2 opens the door quietly. Both mothers have lost their worried looks and have smiles on their faces. The kids look up and smile.
BOY
(grinning ear to ear)
Boo.
GIRL
(grinning mischievously)
Hi mom.
BOY
Hi mom.
MOTHER2
(sheepishly)
We were just checking to see that you two were okay.
MOTHER1 eyes the GIRL with a bit of mistrust in her eyes. The GIRL smiles innocently, but with a bit of mischief in her eyes. The two mothers turn and start to walk down the stairs. As MOTHER2 walks down the stairs, she peeks back before her head goes below the where she can see. Her daughter gives the BOY a kiss on the cheek. She waves at her mom, MOTHER2, who is blushing and shaking her head.
